Even the Romans realized the importance of ionization ... 
In Roman times, legionnaires would carry a water goatskin with them at all times so that they would never be without water. Even larger goatskins were carried for entire legions to make it across desert terrain and enemy territory where wells may have been tainted. Each man would put two coins in their water goatskin, one copper and one silver. The purpose of this was that the movement created while riding would make the two coins slosh against eachother creating an electrical charge that would kill any bacteria that had contaminated the water.
